Satellite-based services for a competitive, autonomous, safe, and resilient Europe

Space Y, an association of European downstream sector companies, has released the position paper “Satellite-based services for a competitive, autonomous, safe, and resilient Europe.”

The paper outlines key challenges and solutions for the European space downstream industry, offering feedback to policymakers preparing the next EU Multi-Annual Financial Framework. It emphasises the urgent need to safeguard Europe’s strategic autonomy in sectors like energy, telecommunications, aviation, and defence, which rely on space technologies.

The document calls for a robust industrial strategy to ensure Europe’s self-sufficiency across the space value chain, supported by sustainable funding to generate jobs and improve public services. Highlighting challenges, particularly for SMEs, Space Y warns of the risks a weak space industry poses to Europe’s safety and economic resilience. The paper advocates for a collaborative approach to strengthen European excellence across the value chain and calls for ongoing dialogue between academia, industry, and policymakers.

To compete globally, Europe must unite all stakeholders in shaping the space infrastructure from start to finish. This include continuing actions to increase dialogue among academia, industry and policy makers to make sure that the sector is sustained by a skilled and innovative workforce.
